The Bonds That Binds
There is something about black people that I just can't explain. That something that when you walk into a crowded room or event full of white faces and you instantly start searching. You scanned the room looking for it; that familiar face. A black face. When you finally find it, no words need to be spoken. You just simply nod or give each other a look that says I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you.
When we left the resort to explore the island that unspoken thing among people of color was still present and sometimes with words. A few of the island residents actually said "we're all family" and addressed us as "brothers and sisters". It was amazing to witness and experience that feeling of I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you. We didn't get that "be nice to the tourist song and dance"; there was something much more genuine about the engagement.
Once I returned home and had some downtime, I began to reflect about the experience. I finally figured out what that unspoken thing is. It's Mother Africa. We all were birthed upon her land and dispersed from her coastlines around the globe. There is a bond that binds us that's rooted in strength, perseverance, and resilience. Mother Africa is that invisible bond that binds us. That bond that cause us to search a crowded room for a familiar face. That bond that cause us to say with out words I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you. We truly are one!
