The Bonds That Binds

The Bond That Binds The Bond That Binds
There is something about black people that I just can't explain. That something that when you walk into a crowded room or event full of white faces and you instantly start searching. You scanned the room looking for it; that familiar face. A black face. When you finally find it, no words need to be spoken. You just simply nod or give each other a look that says I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you.

My family and I recently traveled to Jamaica. My travels confirmed that this thing is not limited by boundaries it expands internationally. When we arrived at the airport, the face of the staff lit up when they saw our party. Again, no words needed to be spoken the excitement in their face said it all. Traveling to and during our stay at the resort we received the same treatment from the staff. From the groundmen to the front desk and everywhere in between we experienced VIP treatment. Without words everyone said I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you. Our stay at the resort also gave us an opportunity to meet other people of color from around the world. We too instantly connected with these guests well.

When we left the resort to explore the island that unspoken thing among people of color was still present and sometimes with words. A few of the island residents actually said "we're all family" and addressed us as "brothers and sisters". It was amazing to witness and experience that feeling of I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you. We didn't get that "be nice to the tourist song and dance"; there was something much more genuine about the engagement.

Once I returned home and had some downtime, I began to reflect about the experience. I finally figured out what that unspoken thing is. It's Mother Africa. We all were birthed upon her land and dispersed from her coastlines around the globe. There is a bond that binds us that's rooted in strength, perseverance, and resilience. Mother Africa is that invisible bond that binds us. That bond that cause us to search a crowded room for a familiar face. That bond that cause us to say with out words I see you, I got you, and I acknowledge you. We truly are one!
